Bermudian Springs High School

Jacob Stimer – The senior defensive back was named to the Second Team of the 2008 Associated Press Class AA All-State Football Team. He intercepted an incredible 9 passes this past season in 11 games.

Central York High School

Kyle Baublitz – The junior defensive end/linebacker was named to the First Team of the Associated Press Class AAAA All-State Football Team. He had a hand in an astonishing 166 tackles, 53 of which were solo stops. He averaged 13.8 tackles per game.

Chelsea Clemens – The junior was named to the 2008 PVCA Class AAA All-State Volleyball Team.

Dallastown Area High School

Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Relay Team – The team of freshman Jen Flinchbaugh, sophomore Julie Brown and juniors Emily Slobodian and Tori Shearer received 2008 National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) All-American designation.

The following swimmers were selected out of more than 286,670 national aquatics participants as NISCA Academic All-America swimmers for 2007-08: Danielle Ierley, West Chester University – The sophomore finished fourth in the nation in the 500 and sixth in the 1,000 freestyle events at the 2008 NCAA Division II swimming championships. She was also a member of the 6th place 800 free relay and received All-America honors in each event.

Lauren Botterbusch, Ithaca College – Won the consolation final in the 100 breaststroke and was 13th in the 200 breaststroke, and was also a member of the Bombers’ 8th place 200 medley relay team at the 2008 NCAA Division III swimming championships. She has achieved All-America status eight times in her collegiate career.

Delone Catholic High School

Chris Hartman – The junior was named to the Associated Press Class AA All-State Basketball third team.

Arielle Placke – The senior volleyball player was named to the 2008 PVCA CLASS AA All-State Team.

Ashley Rineman – The senior volleyball player was named to the 2008 PVCA Class AA All-State Team

Jason Brady – The senior was named to the First Team of the 2008 Associated Press Class AA All-State Football Team, as a defensive tackle. With his 6’3”, 290-pound body he was tough on both sides of the Squires’ line.

Dover Area High School

The following swimmers were selected out of more than 286,670 national aquatics participants as National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association Academic All-America swimmers for 2007-08:

Sammie Strausbaugh – The freshman volleyball player was named to the 2008 PVCA Class AA All-State Team.

Michael Plappert – The Special Olympian was the first person with Down Syndrome to swim on the Dover High School swim team, and the first to earn a varsity letter. He was named 2008 Special Olympics Pennsylvania Male Athlete of the Year. He was one of two athletes to represent Pennsylvania in a multi-state regional swim meet held in Raleigh, N.C. He also serves as a Global Messenger for Special Olympics, speaking to school classes and community organizations about the Special Olympics program and its benefits.

Eastern York Senior High School

Sadie Winship – The senior was named the 2008 YAIAA Division 2 Soccer Player of the Year and was also named to the 2008 Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association All-State Team.

New Oxford Senior High School

Red Lion Area Senior High School

Jorden Messersmith – The senior was selected to the 2008 Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association Class AAA Boys’ All-State Soccer Team.

Todd Maciejewski – The senior punter was named to the First Team of the Associated Press Class AAAA All-State Football Team. In 52 attempts, he averaged 41.5 yards per kick.

Danielle Schaefer – The Lion swimmer was selected as a 2007-08 USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.

Chad Kelly – As an 8th grade student at Red Lion Middle School he won his third straight NFL Punt, Pass and Kick title, after enduring a six-month recovery from a bruised spinal cord.

Southwestern High School

Cory Woolston (Penn State University) – As a senior, the Mustang lacrosse player was one of only 30 high school players receiving US Lacrosse All-American designation.

Dan Brown – The Mustang swimmer was selected as a National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Academic All-American.

Kiera Rebert – The senior volleyball player was named to the 2008 PVCA Class AAA All-State Team.

Spring Grove Senior High School

Katie Holtzapple – The sophomore was named YAIAA Division 1 Soccer Player of the year and was also named to the Soccer Coaches Association All-State Team.

Susquehannock High School

Warriors Boy's Soccer Team - Captured the 2008 PIAA Class AA State Championship with a 1-0 victory over Pottsgrove High School. The Warriors became the first team in YAIAA history to claim a state soccer title. Coach Ben Kettlewell was selected by the Soccer Coaches Association as Class AA Boys Soccer Coach of the Year.

Joe Ferraracci – Selected to the 2008 Soccer Coaches Association Class AA All-State Soccer Team, and as an East Coast Region All-American.

Jessica Franz – The junior volleyball player was named to the 2008 PVCA Class AA All-State Team.

Dylan Keil – The junior volleyball player was named to the 2008 PVCA Class AA All-State Team.

Kaylyn Knapke – The senior volleyball player was named to the 2008 PVCA Class AA All-State Team.

Billy Kerr (York College of Pennsylvania) – As a senior, the Warrior lacrosse player was one of only 30 Pennsylvania high school players receiving US Lacrosse All-American designation.

West York Area High School

Brandon Real – The senior running back was named to the First Team of the Associated Press 2008 Class AAA All-State Football team. This past season he rushed for over 2,500 yards and scored 51 touchdowns. He was selected Player of the Year in Division II of the YAIAA.

Matt Bozart – The senior trapshooter brought home seven trophies from the 117th annual Pennsylvania State Shoot, including the Attorney General’s Junior Champion Cup. He was skilled enough to be invited to last year’s pre-Olympic trials and hopes to compete for a spot at the 2012 Games in London.

William Penn High School

Malik Generett – The senior wide receiver was named to the First Team of the 2008 Associated Press Class AAAA All-State Football Team. He hauled in 49 passes for 995 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Bearcats. He will play for the University of Connecticut next season.

Jordan Davis – The senior quarterback was named to the Second Team of the 2008 Associated Press Class AAAA All-State Football Team. He completed 59 percent of his passes for more than 2,200 yards and 26 touchdowns.

York Catholic High School

Kady Schrann – The freshman was named to the 2008 AP girls’ PIAA Class AA All-State Basketball First Team.

York Suburban Senior High School

Boys 200 Yard Medley Relay Team - The team, consisting of Kevin Marsteller, Chris Manning, Harry Foster and Ben Appleby won the class AA Title at the 2008 PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, and in the process set a state record with a time of 1:34:63.

Julia Kucherich – The junior, who formerly swam for the North Baltimore Aquatic Club and who now swims solely for the York YMCA Aquatic Club, was selected as a 2008 USA Swimming All-American, with a criteria that includes a 3.50 GPA along with USA Jr. National bonus time cut. She was also selected to the 2008 USA Junior National Swimming Team, and will represent the USA in the 2009 Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet in Vancouver, Canada. She has qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 400 IM (4:50:39). Her 400 IM time currently ranks 120 in the FINA world rankings, and 7th in the USA swimming Top 10 for a 16 year old. She is the first York YMCA swimmer to qualify for the Olympic Trials since 1946.

Millersville University

Charlie Parker (Kennard Dale High School) – The senior was high scorer and was named Most Valuable Player of the East squad in the East’s 103-97 victory over the West in the 2008 NABC All-Star game. The game is the nation’s Division II men’s basketball showcase, featuring the top 20 players from across the country. Parker finished his collegiate career as Millersville's second all-time leading scorer and two-time PSAC East Player of the Year. He was also selected a 2008 NCAA Division II basketball All-American.

Penn State York

Justin Shaffer (Northern High School) – The freshman was named to the 2008 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-American Soccer First Team.

Suhaib Alqaddomi (West York High School) – The sophomore was named to the 2008 USCAA All-American Soccer First Team.

Tim Krohn (Eastern York High School)- The freshman was named to the 2008 USCAA All-American Soccer First Team.

Ben Suarez – The junior was named to the 2008 USCAA All-American Soccer Second Team.

John Suarez – The sophomore was named a 2008 USCAA Soccer First-Team Academic All-American.

In this, their first year in the USCAA, the local Lions advanced to the 5th place match in the USCAA National Championship at Rochester College in Pontiac, Michigan.

York College of Pennsylvania

John Niedrich - The 157 lb. junior wrestler was named a 2007-08 NCAA Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete. He finished the season with a record of 27-7 and a GPA of 3.26. He is York's 27th wrestler to earn such an accolade.

 

2009 SHIPLEY SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENTS

The Shipley Special Achievement Awards are presented to athletes who have received a prior Shipley Distinguised Achievement Award and who have continued to excel at the highest levels in the chosen sport.

Dallastown Area High School

Lauren Wingard – The senior was named to the 2008 PVCA Class AAA All-State Volleyball Team. She was also named to the team in 2007.

Eastern York Senior High School

Mike Kraft – As a senior, he was named to the 2008 PVCA Class AA All-State Volleyball First Team, repeating his selection in 2007. He was also named 2008 YAIAA Div. II Player of the Year, and was selected to the District III Class AA All-Star First Team.

Northeastern Senior High School

Autumn Lau – The junior was named to the 2008 Associated Press AAA All-State Basketball second team. Last year she was named to the third team.

Red Land Area Senior High School

Chad Christen – The senior place kicker was named to the 2008 AP Class AAAA All-State Football First Team. He was named to the Second Team in 2007.

Red Lion Area Senior High School

Kelsey Fuller – The senior was named to the PVCA Class AAA All-State Volleyball Team. She was also named to the team in 2007.

Spring Grove Senior High School

Whitney Myers, University of Florida – The senior has been named a 2008 Third-Team All-American in women’s golf by Golfweek magazine. She helped the Gators win the Southeastern Conference Championship and was named to the All-SEC Team. She had the second lowest stroke average on the team at 73.66.

Susquehannock High School

Girl's Softball Team – The team won their second consecutive PIAA Class AAA State Championship. The team’s coaching staff of Dave Pollick (head coach), Don Mercadante and Katie Pollick was selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as the North Region Softball Coaching Staff of the Year.

York Catholic High School

Girl's Basketball Team – The team won the 2008 PIAA Class AA state title for the third straight year by defeating Northern Cambria 52-40.

Jacob Iati – The senior was named to the Associated Press Class AA

All-State Basketball First-Team. He was also named to the first team last year. Iati graduates as the new all-time leading boys’ scorer in YAIAA basketball history, with 2237 points.

YorkSuburban Senior High School

Boys Swimming Team – The team won their third consecutive Class AA Title at the 2008 PIAA Swimming Championships.

Boys 400 Yard Freestyle Relay Team – The team, consisting of Kevin Marsteller, Chris Manning, Harry Foster and Ben Appleby, won their third consecutive Class AA Title at the 2008 PIAA Swimming Championships when they went 3:08:27, smashing the previous state record by more than two seconds.

Kevin Marsteller – The junior won the gold medal in the 100 backstroke at the 2008 PIAA Class AA Swimming Championships for the second consecutive year.

Chris Manning – Won the gold medal in the 100 breaststroke at the 2008 PIAA Class AA Swimming Championships.

Lauren Schmittle – The junior Won gold medals in both the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle at the 2008 girls’ PIAA Class AA Swimming Championships.

York College of Pennsylvania

Brittany Inkrote (Red Lion High School) – The junior won the 145-pound class at the 2008 National Police Athletic League Boxing Championships, and then in the 2008 Women’s National Golden Gloves Championships she finished second, losing a close decision in the title bout. Even though she lost in the finals, she obtained enough points to capture the No. 1 national ranking.

Chad McGowan – The senior basketball player followed up his NABC Division III Basketball First-Team All-American selection last year by being named to the 2008 All-American Second-Team. He also became the fourth player in Capital Athletic Conference history to win a second Player of the Year award. It was the third straight first-team all-CAC honor for McGowan, who was conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2005. He is the only NCAA Division III All-American in York College men’s basketball history.
